Vail Street, Prahran

Extension to an existing dwelling

  • This project involved the considered restoration and extension of a late 19th-century double-fronted Victorian terrace in the heart of South Yarra. Working within a heritage overlay, the design retains and restores the original façade and key period features, while a new rear addition provides spatial generosity, light, and contemporary amenity.

The extension introduces a new open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, designed to open out to a private courtyard. Full-height glazing, stone finishes, and a restrained material palette complement the warmth of the original home without overpowering it. Upstairs, a new master suite with ensuite and terrace was added, improving function while maintaining privacy.

Careful planning ensured the new works are visually recessive from the street, with massing and form designed to sit respectfully behind the heritage roofline. The result is a home that honours its past while responding to the way we live today — light-filled, connected, and refined in its detailing.
