Swan Street, Richmond

Located within a heritage building on Swan Street, Richmond, this project involved the design of a new staircase to connect the two storeys of the existing structure. Originally enclosed within a rendered shaft, the space was stripped back by the builder to reveal the raw brickwork beneath. Embracing this discovery, the design introduces a sleek black metal stair that complements the exposed brick, creating a striking contrast between old and new. The result is a functional yet expressive insertion that enhances circulation while celebrating the building’s layered history and materiality.
